Gold coins of Justin II Byzantine Emperor

November 15 565 through October 5 578

Justinian I's nephew who was not up to the task of controlling such a large empire.  Within five years much territory was lost to to both the Visigoths and Lombards.  His refusal to pay tribute to the Persians began a long series of wars in the eastern part of the empire.  During his last four years, Tiberius effectively took over control due to Justin II's mental illness.
