Coin with a hole “The Holey Dollar” Australia

Commemorative silver $1 coins with a large hole, called “The Holey Dollar”, were minted in Australia in 1988, 1989 and 1990. The issue is dedicated to the culture of the Aboriginal people.

These coins were issued in sets of quarters that were exactly the right size to fit into the hole of a dollar.

Inscription around the hole: “ONE ONCE THE HOLEY DOLLAR .999 SILVER”.

Design around the hole:

1988 – Snake eating its own tail.

1989 – Two crocodiles one after the other.

1990 – Stylized images of two aborigines at the top and jungle at the bottom

Inscription around the hole: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA at the top, ONE DOLLAR at the bottom.
